1. THERE'S THE DOOR

So the King took his horses and all his men
And they split town for the weekend
Leaving me lying here in pieces on the ground for a while
It should be tragic, but it kind of makes me smile

And the inappropriate laughter on my lips
Spreads on down through my arms to my fingertips
And I know exactly what you'd say
'Cause I can hear you through the back door to the alleyway

You'd say "If you can't do the fall, then don't climb the wall
And if you can't take no more, baby, there's the door."

2. EVERYTHING I SAID

I just don't feel like going out, that's all
I'm not really waiting for the girl to call
Though just in case she is so inclined
I'm staying off the line

I don't even know what I would have to say
Though I've been thinking about her half of the day
Til everything I thought I knew for sure
Goes flying out the door

Everything I said is coming back to me
The words that I say just seem to fly away
And get twisted around til I can't see

It seems there must be something I've done wrong
Cause I've been waiting now for much too long
You'd think there'd have to be a better way
For me to spend the day

Everything I said is coming back to me
The words that I say just seem to fly away
And get twisted around til I can't see

If I could stop my brain from going on and on
Maybe then I'd get on with my life when she's gone

But I just don't feel like going out, that's all
I'm not really waiting for the girl to call
Though just in case she is so inclined
I'm staying off the line

3. MAYBE YOU'LL UNDERSTAND

Well I've been a fool for you for going on quite a while
And I can't keep the secret anymore
I wish I could say it all, then I'd tell you everything
But it's nothing that hasn't been said before
With words more revealing, in a style more appealing
Than anything I could say
Maybe you'll understand anyway

Well timing is everything, and I let the moment pass
Should I wait til it comes around once again?
Cause I need to make it clear, and I just don't care anymore
If you've heard it from a hundred different men
With words more revealing, in a style more appealing
Than anything I could say
Maybe you'll understand anyway

And maybe I'll find that you like what you hear
When I tell you I can't think of life without you
I don't know what I would do

It's nothing that hasn't been said before
But maybe you'll understand me anyway

4. THAT LOOK ON YOUR FACE

It will all be fine, everything's been planned so neatly
I'll walk downstairs, approach your door and knock discretely
But somewhere along the way
I put it off for another day
And I kind of figured that you might say
"This ain't the time or the place"
With that look on your face

Then it dawns on me what a fool I was to doubt you
And I just can't believe I'm spending one more night without you
But somewhere along the way
I put it off for another day
And I kind of figured that you might say
"This ain't the time or the place"
With that look on your face

It's all well and good for you
You're probably sleeping right through the night
But I got nothing to do but think about you
Until the morning light

It will all be fine, everything's been planned so neatly
I'll walk downstairs, approach your door and knock discretely
But somewhere along the way
I put it off for another day
And I kind of figured that you might say
"This ain't the time or the place"
With that look on your face

5. GROUNDHOG DAY

It's not a day to take lightly for the folks around here
What with people coming in from both far and near
They'll be crowding the streets, they'll be waiting in line
Cause February 2nd is such a magical time

Commemorative T-shirts will be going on sale
Every year it can be counted on without fail
Even though it's all forgotten by the end of May
The people get excited about Groundhog Day

Which is it now, I can never keep it straight
If the thing sees its shadow will the spring come late?
Or then again, is it the other way around?
Why don't the damn thing just stay in the ground?

6. SANTA'S GOT A BRAND NEW BAG

It's been a long, hot summer for Mr. Kringle
So much work to be done
Pumping up and working out all day
No time for fun in the sun
Because he'd heard the talk from the year before
The kids all thought that he was such a bore
He's out to prove them all wrong
And he'll be singing this song

Santa's got a brand new bag full of toys
And a five speed, posi-traction sleigh
Surprises in store for all the girls and the boys
It won't be long before he's on his way

He traded in those clunky old reindeer
He got the turbo power
He shaved his beard and tossed his hat in the bin
He took a much needed shower
Now he seems to think that he's ready to go
So bring on December, yeah, bring on the snow
Ring the bells and bang the gong
And he'll be singing this song

Santa's got a brand new bag full of toys
And a five speed, posi-traction sleigh
Surprises in store for all the girls and the boys
It won't be long before he's on his way

7. THIS CLOWN

Don't be fooled by my floppy footwear
Pay no mind to my big red nose
Though I'm laughing on the outside
There's a heavy heart beneath these baggy clothes

And when my friends and I go driving by
In our tiny car
I'll say a prayer that you'll be unaware
Of just how sad we are

I've gone through life with a painted smile on
Squirting water and honking my horn
Nowhere to go for this homeless harlequin
Been wandering around since the day that I was born

And though you think you'd see a change in me
Well, it's all the same
Reality's just not the place for me
It's such a simple game

This clown is dying on the inside
With nothing left to give
Save for his will to live
His work here is done
He'll climb on his tricycle and ride away
Into the setting sun

8. MAN OF STEEL

She tears the picture from the frame
But leaves the broken glass
She can't recall who was the first to blame
But she won't forget the last
A conversation would be wasted on his feeble mind
His explanation only helps her to find

That her man of steel has a plastic soul
Feet of clay and a gaping hole
Where his heart should be
As she's beginning to see

Her mind goes wandering through the past
Through all the lies that she has heard
Nearsighted Cupid took his shot in the dark
And then he left without a word
The only voice she hears is in her head, and it's talking slow
The ringing in her ears is letting her know

That her man of steel has a plastic soul
Feet of clay and a gaping hole
Where his heart should be
As she's beginning to see

Black dress is hanging off the back on a chair
Unwatered flowers they are dying there
The phone's been ringing off the hook
You couldn't pay her to care

A conversation would be wasted on his feeble mind
His explanation only helps her to find
That her man of steel has a plastic soul
Feet of clay and a gaping hole
Where his heart should be
As she's beginning to see

9. LAST SEPTEMBER

We walked on the beach last night
Don't you remember?
You asked me why can't things be like they were
Last September
But I said no
You just can't go back in time
But I don't mind, 'cause I feel fine
How are you?

So I woke up today
To find you'd gone
You just took with you the clothes
That you had on
So I took what you left me
And threw it out the window
And I laughed so hard I almost broke my spleen
Do you know what I mean?

But now I'm crying
And wishing you were here
I bet you didn't think I'd ever
Shed a tear
But we walked on the beach last night
Don't you remember?
You asked me why can't things be like they were
Last September

10. FIJI

Three days on the open water
No sign of sun, no sign of land
The captain's hiding in his quarters
And no-one seems to know the plan

Lifeboats are missing and the intercom is dead
And I got a note today that said
It said "You're free to go, you're free to swim ashore
Cause we're not going to Fiji anymore."

Invited by the captain's daughter
To sail off to a distant land
But now the ship's abandoned and forsaken
And they don't think I understand

But I got this feeling now that's growing in my head
Since I got the note today that said
It said "You're free to go, you're free to swim ashore
Cause we're not going to Fiji anymore."

11. SENTIMENTAL TUNE

Just trying to kill some time until I'm feeling like myself
I'm just trying to make the days go by
But I have noticed no improvement in my outlook or my health
I have wounded time, but it will not die

So won't you play me the chorus of a sentimental tune
With a tempo that's as lazy as a Sunday afternoon
I'll pretend that there is meaning hidden inbetween the rhyme
And we'll act as if this sort of thing happens all the time

My eyes are opened wide, but I'm never really sure
Exactly what is going on
Though I always know the winner, I never know the score
And the only one that I could ask is gone

So won't you play me the chorus of a sentimental tune
With a tempo that's as lazy as a Sunday afternoon
I'll pretend that there is meaning hidden inbetween the rhyme
And we'll act as if this sort of thing happens all the time

I've walked a straight line and I've stumbled blindly
But now I'm standing still and I am looking behind me
And the only thing I see
Are these eyes looking back at me
And I don't much like the look of it at all

So won't you play me the chorus of a sentimental tune
With a tempo that's as lazy as a Sunday afternoon
I'll pretend that there is meaning hidden inbetween the rhyme
And we'll act as if this sort of thing happens all the time

12. IF YOU WEREN'T HERE

It would be so nice if you weren't here
It's hard for me to have fun while you are near
But if you were quite far away
Oh, it would be a happier day
It would be so nice if you weren't here

It would be so nice if you were dead
But you're alive instead
And still I find you by my side
Though many times I've tried to hide
It would be so nice if you weren't here

Many times I've dreamed of the day when you would go away
I've hoped and I have prayed that you won't stay
And often I have wondered if there's anything that I could say
To hasten your departure from my life

It would be so nice if you were gone
But you just seem to linger on and on
And I don't think you'll ever leave
As long as you or I still breathe
But it would be so nice if you weren't here

13. I'LL LET YOU KNOW

Tell me what you want me to say
I haven't got all day
If it's submission and humility that you seek
Then you've lost your paddle and you're way up the creek
You're barking up the wrong tree coming to me

Tell me what you expected to hear
Words of love, or maybe fear
Well, tell me why I should feel that way
After what I've seen today
You're picking on the wrong guy this time

Ask me what I'm going to do
After all that you've put me through
Well I'm going down to the river and I'm jumping in
I'm going to teach myself to swim
If I see your paddle I'll let you know
